Google has introduced a new small area in Gmail web called ‘Meet’. This new option allows you to do two things:
- Start a meeting
- Join a meeting
You may be wondering what this option is, why it is there, and how to remove or hide it.
What is Google Meet?
Google Meet is a product from Google, accessible via https://meet.google.com/ or via their app on Android or iPhone, that allows you to host or join a video conferencing meeting.
Why does this ‘Meet’ option appear in Gmail web?
Due to the corona situation, the popularity of online video conferencing tools are dramatically increasing. Some examples include: Apple’s FaceTime service, Zoom, WhatsApp, Skype, Microsoft Teams.
Obviously, Google wants to push their proper serive to as much people as possible. They do this by implicitly ‘advertising’ the Meet tool to existing Gmail customers. Meet is also tightly integrated with other Google applications, so a logged in Gmail user will be able to easily use Meet as well (without a separate login).
How to hide Meet in Gmail
Let me give you the answer immediately: I could not find an option to hide Meet in Gmail. Unlike Chat, which you can disable via the options of Gmail web version, there is no similar option for Meet.
You could still hide the Meet element fromt he page by blocking it via a custom rule in your adblocker, such as uBlock. My custom rule is to block the following DOM element on the page:
Perhaps, in the future, Google will implement an on-off switch so that you can easily disable this new feature.
